WSU Admission Requirements 2024-2025. In adherence to the Government Gazette of 26 November 2009, Walter Sisulu University (WSU) invites applications from potential students holding a National Certificate (Vocational-Level 4) seeking enrollment in Higher Certificate, Diploma, or Degree programs. Minimum Entry Requirements

Higher Certificate

  • Must meet NC (V) Level 4 statutory requirements.
  • 40% in either home language or first additional language (LOTL), with one being the language of teaching.
  • 50% in either Mathematics or Mathematics Literacy.
  • 40% in Life Orientation.
  • 50% in the four other vocational subjects.
  • Submission of a record of evidence for any failed subjects.

Diploma

  • Must meet NC(V) Level 4 statutory requirements.
  • 50% in three fundamental subjects, including LOTL.
  • 60% in three compulsory vocational subjects.

Bachelor’s Degree

  • Must meet NC(V) Level 4 statutory requirements.
  • 60% in three fundamental subjects, including LOTL.
  • 70% in three compulsory vocational subjects.

General Admission Requirements

As per the Higher Education Act No 101 of 1997, amended in May 2008:

  • Minimum admission requirements for higher certificate, diploma, and bachelor’s degree programs require a National Senior Certificate (NSC).
  • WSU has the right to establish specific admission requirements within the context of this policy.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

  • Admission under RPL is in accordance with WSU policy.
  • Transfer from other institutions will be considered on merit.
  • Dean may exercise discretion under exceptional circumstances.
  • Applicants excluded from other institutions on academic grounds will not be considered.

Admission Point Score (APS)

  • Applicants with NSC qualification must meet the required APS for each program.
  • WSU uses a rating system based on levels and percentages.

General Rules and Comments

  • Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to programs in the Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology.
  • Competitive selection process due to a high volume of applications.
  • SATAP tests conducted for Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology applicants.
  • SATAP test/portfolio presentation weighted equally with academic results.

Admission from Other Degree and Diploma Programs

  • Consideration for admission to postgraduate programs for students with appropriate degrees.
  • Limited admission for students with incomplete degrees to all graduate programs.

Admission of FET College Students

Diploma

  • Minimum admission requirement: National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4.
  • At least 40% in three fundamental subjects, including English.
  • At least 50% in three compulsory vocational subjects.

Bachelor’s Degree

  • Minimum admission requirement: National Certificate (Vocational) Level 4.
  • At least 50% in three fundamental subjects, including English.
  • At least 60% in four compulsory vocational subjects.

Entry Requirements for Basic Medical Sciences

  • Fundamental understanding of body functions required.
  • Students with a good pass in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Biology/Life Sciences are favored.
