National Senior Certificate (NSC) and Matriculation Exemption

For Bachelor’s Degree programmes, applicants must have an NSC indicating a Bachelors’ endorsement. Matriculation Exemption endorsement is required for applicants with an old Senior Certificate.

Admission Point System (APS)

The Faculty of Education uses a point system for admissions, where achievement levels are translated into points for each NSC subject. The total Admission Point Score (APS) should meet a minimum of 26 points for a Bachelor’s degree. Points are awarded based on the percentage obtained in each subject, excluding Life Orientation and Mathematical Literacy.

  • 86%: 8.6 points
  • 82%: 8.2 points
  • 79%: 7.9 points
  • 64%: 6.4 points
  • 55%: 5.5 points
  • 43%: 4.3 points
  • 39%: 3.9 points
  • 31%: 3.1 points
  • 30%: 3.0 points

Admission Requirements per Programme

Bachelor of Education (FP)

  • Matriculation: Senior Certificate with Matriculation Exemption endorsement.
  • NSC: Bachelors’ endorsement with specific achievement ratings in subjects.

Bachelor of Education (SP & FET): EMS

  • Matriculation: NSC with Bachelor’s degree endorsement.
  • Alternative pathways: SC with matriculation exemption, NCV Level 4/N3 Certificate, or N4/N5/N6 Certificate/National N Diploma.

BEd (SP & FET): Humanities, Languages, and Arts and Culture

  • NSC: Bachelor’s degree endorsement with specific achievement ratings in English, isiXhosa, History, Geography, and Life Orientation.
  • Alternative pathways: SC with Matriculation Exemption or mature exemption, NCV Level 4, or N4/N5/N6 Certificate.

BEd (SP & FET): Mathematics, Science & Technology

  • NSC: Bachelor’s degree endorsement with specific achievement ratings in Life Sciences, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, and English.
  • Alternative pathways: SC with Matriculation Exemption or mature exemption, NCV Level 4, or N4/N5/N6 Certificate.
