WSU Coalition of Academic Student Employees ratifies contract. At academic institutions across the nation, a wave of student worker organizing is making significant strides. Notably, (WSU) stands out with a groundbreaking achievement as the Coalition of Academic Student Employees successfully ratifies its inaugural union contract.

Major Gains for Student Employees

With this landmark agreement, student employees at WSU can now enjoy paid vacation benefits for the first time. Additionally, a noteworthy inclusion is the introduction of six weeks of paid parental leave, marking a substantial leap forward in recognizing and supporting the diverse needs of the student workforce.

Substantial Salary Increases

The contract doesn’t stop at enhanced benefits; it also translates to higher wages for student workers. Over the next two and a half years, the minimum salary for a typical doctoral candidate working in Pullman is set to surge by an impressive 49%. This change aims to address the economic disparities faced by students, especially those living in areas with a higher cost of living.

Personal Testimony: Life-Changing Impact

Ninh Khuu, a third-year doctoral student at WSU specializing in plant pathology, emphasizes the life-changing impact of these pay increases. Living and working in Prosser, where the cost of living is higher than the main campus in Pullman, Khuu anticipates a significant boost in his monthly income—from approximately $2,000 to a range of $2,500-$2,600. Khuu expresses the sentiments of many unit members, highlighting the excitement of being able to cover rent more comfortably and reduce reliance on food pantries.

Path to Progress: From Complaints to Victory

This victory follows a series of strategic moves by the union, including filing a complaint of unfair labor practices in September, extensive negotiations, and a recent strike. Despite the challenges, the Coalition of Academic Student Employees persevered, resulting in the ratification of a contract that signifies substantial progress for student workers at WSU.

University Perspective: Investing in Excellence

Phil Weiler, WSU vice president of University Marketing and Communications, applauds the ratified contract, emphasizing the critical role graduate students play in teaching and research. Weiler expresses confidence that this contract will enhance the university’s ability to attract top-tier graduate students to contribute to WSU academic excellence.

Overwhelming Support and Ongoing Advocacy

The union represents more than 1,800 student workers across WSU campuses and research stations statewide. The resounding approval of the contract by 99% of its members underscores the unity and collective determination of student employees. As negotiations continue, the focus shifts to upcoming discussions, such as the 2024-25 health plan for student workers, illustrating the ongoing commitment of the union to advocate for its members and improve their working conditions.
